So M.I.A. shocked and awed the conservative Parents Television Council, “the nation’s most influential advocacy organization protecting children against entertainment sex, violence and profanity”. Apparently, she even shocked the original shock and awer Madonna herself, who can’t stand being upstaged at her own show. What has become of America, whose most famous and enduring act was a gigantic bird-flip to colonial Great Britain way back in the 18th century?

Tablets: Before & After iPad

This is funny-sad. I actually enjoy some of these pre-iPad Windows tablets that look like Obama might be able to enter some codes to start World War 54 or whatever we are on now. It’s sad that there is not more innovation in the offing. Theft is not innovation, unfortunately. Otherwise, we would be living in a highly innovative world.

Weiner: It’s the pictures, stupid!

Despite having broken no laws and being the instigator of one of the tamest sex scandals ever, Anthony Weiner has embroiled all of us in a firestorm of pathological finger-wagging, shaming and prurience that’s been the equivalent of a national vomit-burp. He didn’t do anything with a cigar, he apparently wasn’t soliciting or using a wide stance, he didn’t technically cheat or dump his wife or father multiple love children. So, we have to wonder why this particular titillation has engendered such a firestorm of condemnation and shaming when so many others have done so much worse and gotten off so much easier?

And I say, it’s the pictures. Not just one picture, but many. In various embarrassing stances and states of undress and weird facial expressions and states of tumescence. Like a gift-wrapped press package of hubris, corruption, obsession and recklessness. I don’t blame Weiner. I think in the next generation of politicians we may be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t have their anatomy floating around in digital form. In this sense we can see that Weiner is on the cutting edge of the next technological deviance. And I think a victim of both his lack of appetite control but also the technology and its inherent nature.

I always come back to Marshall McLuhan’s statement about the content of a medium versus the nature of a medium. And I think we continue to see that he was correct in surmising that the true revolution of media is not in what it carries but in how and how this then enfolds and changes our very nervous system, which is to say our brains, which is to say ourselves. The medium itself is the message.

I think it’s obvious Mr. Weiner has some issues and I find the media feeding frenzy around the situation nauseating. My hope was that he would stay and fight but now I see that the frenzy would have continued and for his, his wife and child’s and the country’s sake, I’m glad it has ended.

God Bless America!
